Natural stone: Quarried stone cut into slabs/pieces, thickness 4″-8″, weight 12-15 lbs per sq ft, requires structural support (ledge, corbels, or heavy-duty ties), expensive ($25-65/sq ft installed), limited availability of specific colors/shapes.

Stone veneer: Concrete-based product molded from real stone, thickness 1″-2″, weight 3-5 lbs per sq ft, adheres directly to wall with mortar (no structural support), affordable ($15-35/sq ft installed), consistent availability in many styles.

Visual difference: High-quality stone veneer is virtually indistinguishable from natural stone when installed properly. Only close inspection or tapping (sounds hollow vs. solid) reveals difference.

Sealing benefits: prevents water absorption and freeze-thaw damage, reduces efflorescence (white salt deposits), inhibits moss/algae growth on north-facing walls, maintains color (some stones darken with water), extends lifespan 30-50%, eases cleaning (dirt doesn’t penetrate).

Sealer types: Penetrating sealer (absorbed into stone, invisible, lasts 5-10 years), topical sealer (surface coating, slight sheen, lasts 3-5 years), color-enhancing sealer (deepens/darkens stone color).

We apply penetrating sealer to all natural stone and grout joints at completion ($2-4/sq ft additional). Re-application needed every 8-12 years (DIY or professional).

Yes, stone veneer can be installed over many substrates:

Over brick: Yes, with proper surface prep. Clean surface, apply scratch coat of mortar, apply veneer with thinset mortar. Works well because brick provides solid substrate.

Over stucco: Yes, if stucco is sound. Stucco must be well-adhered (no delamination), clean, and preferably roughened. Apply bonding agent, then install stone with thinset.

Over concrete: Ideal substrate. Clean surface, apply bonding agent, install veneer.

Over wood framing: Requires weather-resistant barrier (building paper or house wrap), metal lath, scratch coat, then veneer installation.

Over foam board (rigid insulation): Possible with proper reinforcement. Install lath over foam, scratch coat, then veneer.

Not recommended over: vinyl siding (must remove first), EIFS with significant damage, painted surfaces without prep, unstable surfaces.
