What Type of Mortar Should I Be Using?

If you are doing above grade masonry work you should be using N-type mortar. Should you be doing any below grade, which may include cinder blocks as retaining walls, foundation walls you should be using S-type mortar.

The composition of both mortars is different. S-type mortar is medium strength and the PSI is different from N-type mortar.

To repair brick or any other masonry in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area you need to first identify the problem. Climate is important in determining what possible issues you may have. If the brick is load bearing you need to ensure that it will not collapse and you may have to work bit by bit. Alternatively, you risk collapse. If there is any flaking in the brick you would either have to apply a cementitious finish to right across to stall the extent of the damage or replace it altogehter. In areas where lintels have not bee used, it may be in your based interest to add one or to use a proper keystone which was in the earlier years was achieve by bricks alone. 

At Alasya Construction, our team grinds the tuckpointing so the new material can bond with the old. When doing this you have to make sure to clean and apply some water by spray bottle, then can you tuckpoint and ensure approriate bonding. We often repair bricks on chimneys and lower parts of the house in Toronto and the GTA and 80% of our projects are more to do with the preparation than the actual application. 

As a certified brick repair company in Toronto and the GTA we most often do not use any colourants, but this does not mean cannot. Our go-to, similar to other bricklayers in N type mortar mix. Quickrete and other companies, often sold at Lowes in Toronto, do have 3-4 colourants that can be used. This is all about personal preference. 

Yes, you can stain your brick. You should not paint your brick but staining is the way to go if you would like to add some colour to it. 

Yes, you can powerwash your brick but cautious with the PSI. Start of low, then you can up the pressure to find the ideal spray pressure.
