FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

There are several main reasons why exterior stucco mouldings in Toronto and GTA crack. The top three reasons are:

1- Bad supplier. Not all mouldings are manufactured by reputable companies. It is important to ask who the moulding supplier is to determine the quality of the exterior moulding. The types of mesh, basecoat, amount of glue and aggregates that are used determine the quality of the material.

2- Poor workmanship when installing especially in and around patches.

3- Weather conditions when installing because it has not properly cured.

You need to use a reputable company. Ideally using stucco suppliers for paint is better than using your general hardware paint stores. You should also aim to use elastomeric paint with a bit of aggregate in it instead finer paint as any imperfection will be noticeable.

It is very likely that the exterior moulding patch and finish coat was applied during the winter months and instead of the material curing it froze. You need to use the right additives and apply during the mid day if you are doing any work during the winter. Typically any work that is done later in the afternoon is insufficient as it does not give enough time to cure. However, you can also use a hair blower or heat gun to help cure if you cannot tarp and heat the area.

If the workmanship was done well. You can be assured that as long as the house is present, the moulding will be present as well. You will have to maintain it by washing, sanding, and re-painting, but exterior stucco moulding is lifetime.

The biggest advantage stucco moulding gives you is that it can be applied and tweaked  even in uneven surfaces. Stucco mouldings gives you the flexibility in installation and with its lightweight and ability to bond with base coat cementitious material its bonding is strong. On the other hand, PVC mouldings are limited in its application but is a lot more durable and will not easily get damaged.
